Summary and Recommendation on Canvas LMS Software

In summary, the evaluation revealed that Canvas LMS embraces a user-friendly interface, enhanced by an abundance of readily accessible step-by-step videos online. The website provides online technical support through a panda bot, ensuring an immediate response to questions. Additionally, the site offers step-by-step guidance, blog support for common queries, and product guides within the in-structure community on how to use Canvas.

Educators can benefit from "free-for-teacher accounts", providing essential features of Canvas at no cost for educators, students, parents, and administrators. This access allows users to utilize vital Canvas features and create courses free of charge, either through a school account or a free (non-school associated) Canvas account. However, the paid Canvas account offers additional features not available with a free-for-teachers account.

Canvas imposes no limit on the number of students who can enroll, and users can maintain multiple accounts. However, it is worth noting that local support for Canvas LMS is unavailable in Barbados, only online support is available at no additional charge, or phone support is available at an hourly rate.
Canvas LMS offers free online updates which are accessible on the website, with new upgrade release notes available in the help section of the navigation bar on the website.

Comprehensive online tutorials are readily available on both YouTube and the Canvas community pages, offering easily accessible guidance for users. These resources serve as valuable aids, ensuring users can navigate and utilize Canvas LMS effectively.

In addition, Canvas seamlessly operates across multiple platforms, including Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Safari. It is compatible with various operating systems such as Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, Android, or any device equipped with a modern web browser.
Integration with Microsoft Office and Google Docs is seamless, and the straightforward use of embedded code allows for the easy addition of videos, quizzes, and other content. Additionally, Canvas offers a mobile app version for convenient access via cell phones and other mobile devices. Users can effortlessly download the mobile app using a provided QR code for a hassle-free experience.

Canvas enables the generation of customized reports through various templates and calculations, including decaying average, number of times, most recent score, highest score, and more. It facilitates the analysis of student competency reports and overall course ratings, with reports easily generated directly from the site. Additionally, users with administrative privileges for an institution can customize report designs to cater to the institution's needs.

Canvas LMS possesses various notation capabilities, including the note column in the grade book for teacher comments on student performance. Text, audio, or video annotations are available when grading student assignments, such as in the Speedgrader tool, which utilizes Canvas Doc viewer. This tool allows educators to view and grade student work in one place, accepting various document formats and URLs as submissions. Scores can be recorded as percentages or grades, and feedback given in the form of text, media, or audio content. A link directly to the rubric is located on the page, allowing for easy access while grading. Anonymous grading is also available, among other features.

Canvas LMS is designed to ensure an accessible and enjoyable experience for all users, irrespective of disability. It employs Accessible Rich Internet Applications (ARIA) to enhance web content and applications for individuals with disabilities. Notable features include audio notifications in the chat tool, the Canvas navigator, and screen readers with text-to-speech capabilities. Additionally, audio recording functionalities on Speedgrader further contribute to Canvas's commitment to accessibility.

Additionally, Canvas incorporates an integrated Accessibility Checker within its Rich Content Editor, examining elements like color contrast, image alt text, heading structure, and table markup. The Universal Design Online Content Inspection Tool (UDOIT) scans course content on Canvas, generating comprehensive reports and providing guidance on addressing accessibility issues. Additionally, Canvas users can leverage Blackboard Ally, which automatically generates alternative accessible formats for uploaded materials, supplies instructors with accessibility scores and improvement suggestions, and offers institutional reporting for targeted outreach and training efforts.

Canvas provides a range of features, including profiles, event calendars, announcement sections, discussion boards, pages, files, attendance tracking, emails, collaboration boards, and Big Blue Button video conferencing. These features are not only conducive to academic activities but also cater to non-academic pursuits such as those found in extracurricular clubs, school teams, staff, and student committees. Accounts can be easily created to foster a non-academic environment, promoting open conversations among students and staff. Furthermore, the system allows for the generation of reports on user participation, attendance, and user profile information as needed.

  1. As an educator I have used a variety of online teaching and instructional platforms, website and apps. Specifically, during the pandemic I was required to create my official online classroom via one of the more popular online classroom applications. I have also been a student or participant in online classes, webinars and meetings. In my experience there has been a limitation to the affordable access that I have had as an educator and as student which has forced me to create multiple accounts to take advantage of the trial perks as the paid subscriptions are pricey. Additionally, the Caribbean region is often blocked for many applications and the mobile version of these apps are sometimes unavailable. Canvas is a viable alternative for educators who want to maintain and grow the online class option and diversify their educational strategies in an easy to use and affordable way.
